Pineapple

Ananas sativus

This popular tropical fruit is very nutritive, as it is rich in vitamins A, B and C, as well as in minerals. It is also detoxifying and diuretic. Its enzymes are anti-inflammatory, and one of them, bromelain, eases digestion of proteins. It is said to be able to digest an amount of protein 1000 times its weight. Controlled studies have shown that bromelain could help reduce sinusitis symptoms. It may also be helpful in treating rheumatoid arthritis and has a blood-thinning effect. The enzymes in pineapple are able to digest dead skin when the flesh of the fruit is used in facial masks, and break down the fibrin protein that causes heart attacks and strokes. Pineapple is also sometimes eaten by smokers to clear their lungs.
